While cats are sleeping comfortably in their sofas and taking their 16 hours of daily naps, dogs seem to be doing all the hard work ! In today’s world, dogs are offered great career opportunities and responsibilities. It is no coincidence that the dog is said to be man’s best friend … He has always been by his side throughout history to help him through all his life journey whether personal or professional.

1- The Sheepdog

You have certainly all looked out the window while driving through the countryside, and you have seen those famous shepherd dogs jumping around and monitoring the herd. This is one of the first dog “occupations” that comes to mind.

Originally, these dogs had the important task of helping cattle ranchers by guiding and protecting the herds. But today, these dogs are used for other kinds of work, due to their great intelligence and exceptional physical form.

The sheepdog is a millinery canine profession in decline. Notably because there are not so many shepherds in the 21st century.

They are loyal, kind and strong dogs, and they also assist their owners in the daily tasks of herd maintenance. A sheepdog must always be on the lookout to prevent the herd from being attacked by a predator such as a wolf for example.

The Shepherd Family and Welsh Corgi are breeds particularly adapted to protect a flock.

2- The Police Dog

He is the “Horatio Caine” of dogs! His super power? A particularly well-developed sense of smell and his unique bond with his owner. This is why they are a major asset in the canine brigades of law enforcement agencies.

These dogs have great physical and intellectual qualities which constitute as an asset to help the national police force. Their training begins at 10 months old, and it includes a tailor-made 6 months training program in order to develop the reflexes essential to their future profession.

Once their training is complete, these dogs work hand in hand with their assigned dog handler. You can find police dogs in the national police, in the army, but also in the gendarmerie and customs. They are specifically trained to detect explosives, drugs, or even firearms.

The breeds of police dogs are mainly German and Belgian Shepherds, Dobermans and Rottweilers.

3- Rescue dog

These dogs are real heroes! They take care of rescues, whether it takes place at the beach, during natural disasters, or in the mountains! Its canine heroes undergo specific training in order to find people in danger. They are trained to save lives. These dogs are trained from an early age so that their hearing and smell can develop specifically to help people in danger.

4- Guide dog

Trained from an early age in a specialized school, guide dogs for the blind have proven to be a real asset in their everyday life. They provide emotional support and practical support in performing essential daily tasks. He is a faithful companion and a great life assistant. Labradors and Golden Retrievers are most commonly trained as guide dogs, but with the proper education, other breeds can also become guide dogs for the blind.

5- Avalanche dog

When we think of avalanche dogs, we all have in mind this Swiss legend of the Saint Bernard. The friend of all mountain people and extraordinary rescue dog, with his little barrel of brandy supposed to temporarily reactivate blood circulation. This story is more myth than reality, but what is very real is the dedication of mountain rescuers and their loyal colleagues, the avalanche rescue dogs. They are the real heroes of winter.

6- Harness dog

Did you know ? There are only a few breeds of dogs that are “qualified” to be sled dogs. Indeed, only 5 breeds are officially recognized by the Cynologic International Federation (FCI) as having the required qualities. And the lucky ones are: the Canadian Eskimo Dog, the Alaskan Malamute, the Greenland Dog, the Samoyed and the Siberian Husky.

These dogs have a sweet character and can pull and carry very heavy loads over great distances, without getting tired because they are very resistant and withstand low temperatures very well. They love to exercise and get along very well with their peers.

7- The truffle dog

Thanks to his highly developed sense of smell, we can taste these succulent and rare mushrooms that grow under the ground. A truffle dog must have a gentle character, and he must also show endurance and resistance because the search for truffles takes place in winter, for long hours, and often in rather harsh climatic conditions. Another very important point, is that a good truffle dog must be sufficiently well trained to not eat the truffles he finds. Otherwise, it is the foodies who will be disappointed!

8- The doctor dog

Many recent studies have highlighted the effectiveness of dogs and their sense of smell in detecting certain diseases. Like the ones at Cambridge Veterinary University who successfully trained a German Shepherd to detect prostate cancer by sniffing patients’ urine. Some dogs may even detect certain illnesses just by sniffing patients’ breath! A great discovery for the future!

9- The emotional support dog

The emotional support dog is an assistance dog specifically dedicated to people with certain mental disorders such as autistic children. Their role is to reassure and support people suffering from anxiety, depression, and panic disorders. They are a precious help in their daily life. The main breeds in this profession are Labrador and Golden Retrievers.
